Tor detection: check if a visitor IP is a Tor exit node
Visitors who use Tor appear with the IP of a Tor exit node. We check whether that IP is on the current exit node list.
What we check
Tor exit node addresses
Tor Project public exit list, refreshed daily
When to use it
- Ask for extra verification only on Tor connections at sign-in and sign-up
- Separate automated sign-ups and repeated attempts in your logs
- Restrict only features that are often abused, such as posting, for Tor visitors
Good to know
- Exit nodes change often, so nodes added or removed during the day show up at the next refresh.
- Connections through Tor bridges, or a VPN used on top of Tor, do not show up as Tor.
Frequently asked questions
Is the location accurate for a Tor exit node?
No. The location and network belong to the exit node server and have nothing to do with where the visitor really is.
Try it on your own IP first
Checking your own IP is free. Other IPs and the API come with a plan.
