IPinfoBox

How accurate is IP location?

How precise an IP based location is, and why it can show a different place.

The country is usually right

IP addresses are handed to providers by regional internet registries, so the country is correct in most cases.

The city can be tens of kilometres off

IP location is estimated from where the provider's equipment using that address is. So it can show a different city from where you really are. Mobile data in particular often shows the provider's hub location.

VPNs and proxies

With a VPN or proxy, the location is where that server is. Data center IPs are marked as data center in the network type of an IPinfoBox result.

Addresses used worldwide

Services that use the same address in many countries, such as Google DNS (8.8.8.8) or Cloudflare (1.1.1.1), show a single representative location.

Location data changes every month

Providers sometimes move address ranges to other regions. IPinfoBox downloads the public IP location data (DB-IP) again every month.
